Paige Pinnell

Paige Pinnell October 11, 1944 – March 27, 2017

Paige Pinnell was involved in the Santa Fe music festival almost since it’s inception in 1974 as the Santa Fe Banjo & Fiddle Contest, later becoming the Santa Fe Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival. For many years, Paige designed the festival T-shirts and served on the Board of Directors of Southwest Pickers. Paige was a quintessential southern gentleman. He was also an artist, photographer, environmental activist, a frailing style banjo picker, a visionary, teacher, student, scholar of Southwestern history, a rascal, and a self-acknowledged curmudgeon. Paige was the moving force behind reviving the 2017 Santa Fe Traditional Music Festival, and he was an active participant in the Santa Fe Friends of Traditional Music until his passing in March 2017. We miss him, but his inspiration, the twinkle in his eye, and his voice over our shoulders remain with us.

Paige Pinnell – A True Friend of Traditional Music

Paige Pinnell instigated the revival of the Traditional Music Festival in Santa Fe for 2017 after the Southwest Pickers decided to leave the Santa Fe area for other venues. He talked a core group of musicians into working on this revival and making it happen.

Unfortunately Paige passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017, without seeing the completed fruits of his labors. However his legacy provides an inspiration for the rest of us, working on the festival revival, to bring it to fruition, to make it happen.

Paige was a long-time integral member of the Board of Directors of the Southwest Pickers. The quilt (see photo) was made for him by Nick Crews’ wife Crystal from festival t-shirts that Paige was instrumental in designing and following through with shirt production and sales.
