What IS Traditional Music?

This question has been at the heart of the Santa Fe TradFest since the beginning. Generally – it’s handmade music.  Music that might be heard on the front porch. While the Santa Fe TradFest engages professional performers who polish that music to a bright shine, at the root, it's simple music that might be heard around the family hearth.

Our most common thought is … we’ll know it when we hear it!  That usually means music made on acoustic instruments. We tend to avoid electric bands or bands with drum sets. To add to the confusion most “acoustic” instruments today have electric pickups that ease amplification without making major changes in the timbre of the instrument.

The TradFest strives to expand our offerings to a wide variety of acoustic music.  Among them:

Old-time
Bluegrass
Celtic
Northern New Mexican
Indigenous
String Bands
Cajun
Klezmer

Americana
Roots

Gospel

Native American
Cowboy Singers
Balkan
Bagpipe
Mariachi

We want to introduce our attendees to a variety of new forms of music … music that they didn't expect, but are thrilled to discover!
